The new Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff is setting a new standard for sustainable healthcare design. Designed by White Arkitekter and currently under construction by Sacyr UK and Ireland, the project incorporates hempcrete as part of its low-carbon construction strategy, recognising the material’s ability to reduce embodied carbon while creating healthy, breathable and energy-efficient buildings.

By combining natural materials with innovative design, the development demonstrates how hemp-based construction is moving firmly into the mainstream. Once associated primarily with eco-homes, hemp is now being specified on major public buildings where environmental performance, occupant wellbeing and long-term durability are essential.

Projects such as the nVCC reinforce a clear message for architects, developers and contractors: sustainable construction no longer requires compromise. With exceptional thermal performance, natural moisture regulation and a significantly lower environmental impact than many conventional materials, hemp blocks offer a practical solution for meeting the demands of modern construction.

At The Hemp Block Company, we are proud to support this transition by supplying high-performance hemp block systems that enable designers and builders to deliver healthier, lower-carbon buildings without sacrificing quality, performance or buildability. As more landmark developments embrace bio-based materials, hemp blocks are rapidly becoming a smart choice for the next generation of sustainable construction.
