The new Sixth Form building at Glenthorne High School — the Queen Elizabeth II Block

We’re proud to see Hemp Blocks playing a key role in the new Sixth Form building at Glenthorne High School — the Queen Elizabeth II Block.
Designed by Plan A UK, the project reflects a strong commitment to sustainability. By using hemp blocks and lime plaster in place of traditional materials such as cement, gypsum, and concrete, the building significantly reduces embodied carbon while also supporting improved air quality for occupants and the surrounding environment.
The development also incorporates low-carbon technologies, including air-source heat pumps for heating and a planted sedum roof, further enhancing its environmental performance.
It’s fantastic to see the project recognised at the South-East Construction Awards, where it was nominated in two categories and achieved runner-up for both Best Construction Project and Best Architectural Design.
A great example of how thoughtful material choices and design can contribute to a more sustainable built environment.
