Building a Home for the Future in the Heart of Pembrokeshire

Some homes are built to meet today’s standards. Others are built to reflect the values of the people who will live in them for generations.

Tucked away within the beautiful landscape of Pembrokeshire National Park, The Woodland Farm is one such project. Steve, Linda and William are creating a self-build rural workers’ dwelling that embraces traditional craftsmanship while looking confidently towards the future of sustainable construction.

At its heart stands a magnificent traditional pegged oak frame, providing the structure and character of the home. Surrounding it is an equally thoughtful choice of natural building materials, including foam glass granule foundations and 360mm Hemp Blocks, carefully selected to create a comfortable, healthy and low-carbon family home.

Building with Purpose

Years spent renovating older properties taught Steve and Linda that every building material has strengths—and that choosing the right one can make an enormous difference to how a home performs.

Those experiences also prompted a wider question: Could they build a home that relied less on high-carbon materials such as concrete, without compromising on comfort, durability or simplicity?

After researching a wide range of construction methods, Hemp Blocks stood out as the clear choice. Rather than solving a single problem, they offered a combination of benefits that perfectly matched the couple’s ambitions: excellent thermal performance, breathable construction, natural moisture regulation and a significantly lower environmental impact.

“We researched and priced many materials for our home, and none achieved the multiple benefits and relative simplicity of using Hemp Blocks.”

Designed for Tomorrow’s Climate

Like many self-builders, Steve and Linda weren’t simply designing for today’s weather.

They recognised that Britain’s climate is becoming increasingly unpredictable, with hotter summers, milder winters and more frequent extremes.

Their ambition was to create a home that naturally maintains a comfortable internal environment throughout the year.

Using 360mm Hemp Blocks, the walls provide excellent insulation during colder months while the material’s thermal mass helps slow the movement of heat through the building, reducing the risk of overheating during summer. The result is a home designed to remain comfortable with lower energy demand throughout the seasons.

For the family, this wasn’t simply about energy efficiency—it was about creating a home that feels good to live in every day.

Built for the Pembrokeshire Coast

Building within West Wales brings its own challenges. Strong Atlantic winds and driving rain demand robust detailing, so the Hemp Block walls are protected externally by a ventilated cavity and finished with natural timber cladding.

Internally, breathable lime plaster and vapour-open paints allow moisture to move naturally through the wall construction, helping regulate humidity while maintaining a healthy indoor environment.

Together, the oak frame, Hemp Blocks and lime finishes create a wall system that works with nature rather than against it.

Enjoying Every Step

Anyone who has undertaken a self-build knows it can sometimes feel overwhelming. Steve and Linda admit they’ve learned not to focus solely on the finished house.

Instead, they’ve discovered the value of celebrating each milestone along the way—each completed section of oak frame, every course of Hemp Blocks and every stage that brings their vision a little closer to reality.

Perhaps most rewarding of all is knowing that the decisions they’ve made align with their values.

“Building with a genuinely sustainable product like Hemp Blocks is a psychological comfort along that journey. We know we’ve done no harm and can be proud of that, as well as the end result.”

When complete, the house at The Woodland Farm will be much more than an energy-efficient family home. It will stand as an inspiring example of how traditional craftsmanship, natural materials and thoughtful design can come together to create buildings that are beautiful, resilient and ready for the future.
