Case Study: Padbury

Listed property in Padbury, Buckinghamshire

Clay and lime plaster reapplied to the walls

Hempcrete blocks from The Hemp Block Company were used to repair a listed property in Padbury, Buckinghamshire.

The Wattle and Daub wall is the dividing wall between two cottages. Over the years, the many layers of plaster were starting to come off the daub substrate, and the daub itself was starting to delaminate and was very thin, letting a lot of noise through between the two cottages.

The layers of plaster were removed and the daub repaired with a mixture of clay and hemp shiv. The hempcrete blocks from The Hemp Block Company were then built up with lime mortar in front of the daub panel, with wall ties fixing back to the timber frame.

The blocks at the edges were pre-cut to 45 degrees, then curved with a nail float once the wall was finished. The finished blocks give improved sound and heat insulation between the two cottages without compromising the historic fabric of the building.

The historic haired clay and lime plaster removed from the panels was then crushed up in a mortar mill, re-wetted and applied onto the hempcrete blocks to adorn the walls for another 300 years!
