Did you know hemp blocks are naturally fire-resistant?

Fire resistance is not often a significant consideration for traditional construction methods, but with approximately 35,000 house fires per year in the UK, it should be.

Hempcrete is a natural insulative infill material that happens to be fire-resistant, and it can be incorporated into new builds and old.

How fire-resistant are hemp blocks?

When people hear hemp, fire resistance probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind—but hempcrete blocks tell a different story.

Hemp blocks are made from hemp shiv bound together with lime. Once cured, the lime mineralises the hemp, creating a highly fire-resistant building material.
Many hemp block systems achieve a B-s1,d0 fire classification under European standards, meaning they make only a limited contribution to fire, produce very little smoke, and don’t create flaming droplets.
Unlike many conventional insulation materials, hemp blocks don’t require added chemical flame retardants to achieve their fire performance.

The result? A breathable, low-carbon wall system that combines excellent thermal performance with impressive fire resistance – making it an attractive choice for sustainable homes and commercial buildings alike.

Hemp blocks are fire resistant

It’s worth noting that hemp blocks are fire-resistant, not fireproof. As with any building material, the overall fire performance of a wall depends on the complete construction, including finishes, structure and detailing.
